Well, as per the terms originally posted, as of Midnight EST October 9th 1998, the main Prize Trivia Challenge is now closed to entries. And as of November 17th, the Australian Bonus Prize has been won. However, keep reading, if you enjoy Trivia contests...

This Trivia Challenge was posted on September 5th, 1998, and entries for the main Challenge were accepted until Midnight on October 9th, 1998. I have now finished marking the entries... sorry for the delay - quite a bit of effort was involved in the marking! And (drum-roll, please)....

The Two First prize winners, each receiving a complete set of four 6" Xena Action Figures, were:
Shelley Durocher with 570.25 points, and
K. Decker with 554.75 points.
The second highest score was actually attained by:
Cleanthes with 561.5 points,
however Cleanthes did not wish to receive a prize, and so the prizes were passed on to the subsequent high-scoring entries...

The Two Runner-up prize winners each a receiving a custom tee-shirt designed and printed for them according to their own specifications by yours truly, were:
Lynda Toomey & Michele Hubert with 523.5 points.
Julie McNickle with 515 points.

Because Australians hadn't finished seeing Season 3, and several Down Under Xenites wanted to compete, I offered a special Australian Bonus Prize, with a later closing date, subject to the winner at least equalling the score of the lower of the original prize-winners. And the winner for the Australian Bonus Prize (a copy of Nikki Stafford's "Lucy Lawless and Reneé O'Connor: Warrior Stars of Xena") was Karin Walker (Bellybutin) with 556.5 points.

You can email the prize-winners by clicking on their names above, if you'd like to congratulate them, or discuss Xena trivia...

But the Trivia Challenge lives on!

I shall be posting the names and scores of all the best entries here on this page in the Trivia Hall of Fame... and I will continue to accept and score entries (if anybody wants to actually go to all that effort without the prospect of a prize...) So even if you missed the original challenge, if you think you're an expert on the Xenaverse - well here's your chance to prove it, to yourself and everyone else!

And of course, if you're not interested in driving yourself and being competitive, you can always just putter around and have fun seeing how many questions you can answer...

Right, so what does this Challenge consist of, then?

There are three sections to the Challenge, to which you will find the links below. Obviously for amusement you can just browse around and try whatever you want, but to be in the running for the "Trivia Hall of Fame" you'll have to complete all three sections, since if you skip bits, your overall score is bound to be less.

A few points of clarification:

  1. The scope of the Trivia Challenge is all episodes of the first three seasons of Xena: Warrior Princess and the three HTLJ episodes generally known as the Xena Trilogy (The Warrior Princess, The Gauntlet and Unchained Heart). Other HTLJ episodes, even crossover eps, do not figure in any way in the answers to this Challenge.

  2. The content of the Challenge concerns only what can be seen and heard by watching the episodes of the show. There are no questions concerning Trivia about the crew and cast, other than what they do on screen, and there are no questions concerning fan-fiction and Internet Xenite trivia.

  3. Spelling is not an issue - any spelling is ok, so long as I can tell what you mean, and your rendering of character and place names is close enough to the way they sounded on the episode that your answer is clear.

  4. I, however, have used the standard spellings wherever possible, with reference to the credits, and to The Official Guide. And I've proof-read the questions several times. So if you think you find an error in one of the questions, be careful! You may be right - but think whether the question as written could make sense before you assume I've made a mistake.

  5. Acronyms may be used for episode titles so long as they are clear - e.g. it is ok to use ADITL for A Day In The Life, but be careful to distinguish between The Prodigal and The Price, between the HTLJ ep The Warrior Princess and the X:WP ep Warrior...Princess, and between Destiny, The Deliverer, and The Debt etc. For two part eps (The Debt, Sacrifice), you must specify the correct part for your answer to be marked correct (e.g. always write "The Debt 1" or "The Debt II", not just "The Debt").

  6. There is no preset maximum score. Be as specific and precise as you can, especially when answering the questions in the first section. Bonus points will be given for answers showing extraordinary precision or giving extra information, so long as it is strictly relevant to the question asked.

  7. Responses will be scored basically as follows:

    • Section One, General Questions - One point will be given for each part of an answer. So, for example, if a question asks you to list certain characters or episodes, one point will be given for each correct item listed; however one point will be deducted for each incorrect item listed, but with the limit that the overall score for the answer to that particular question or part-question will never be reduced below zero. Bonus points may be awarded for clever stuff, as specified above.

    • Section Two, Quotations - Only one point will be given for each quotation, 1/2 a point for the episode, and 1/2 a point for the speaker. The 1/2 point for the speaker will not be awarded if the episode is wrong. Some of the quotations were spoken by more than one speaker - in these cases the 1/2 point for the speaker will be divided (e.g. 1/4 point for each of two speakers). I don't think that any of the quotations were spoken exactly as written in more than one episode - but if you can prove me wrong and cite two places where a quotation occurred, I will give two points for that answer.

    • Section Three, Picture - One point will be given for correctly identifying the episode from which each picture comes, and one point for correctly specifying what the picture depicts (be brief, e.g. "Xena stabs Phibulus" - do not recount the whole plot of the episode). Bonus points may be given if truly relevant information beyond identifying which episode the picture came from and specifying what it depicts is supplied. In respect of 'clip shows', only images which first were shown in the clip episode will be counted as belonging to the clip episode - in other words, you must cite the episode in which an image first appeared... if you give the name of a clip episode as the answer for an image which first appeared in another ep, then your answer will be marked wrong.

If you want me to score your answers, to enter for the "Trivia Hall of Fame", please:

OK, here are the three sections of the Challenge. Sections one and two are formatted as simple text files, to make is simpler for you to just save them to your hard disk and work on them in your own time. Section three is a web page, since this is the Pictures section, but there is link on the page to allow you to download a Zip file containing thumbnails of all the pictures, which may assist you in working on this section offline.

Section One - General Questions

Section Two - Quotations

Section Three - Pictures

If you have any questions related to this Trivia Challenge (e.g. you want clarification of the rules, or you are sure you have found a mistake in part of the Challenge), then please email me at xorys@idirect.ca. Of course, I can't give any hints about the answers ;<} ... but I will certainly respond to any other questions or comments. And finally... if you want to compete, good luck, and if you just want to putter around, have fun!
